Sonic Drive-In is pairing peanut butter and bacon in its first LTO of 2024, launching Monday.
The Peanut Butter Bacon SuperSonic Double Cheeseburger and Peanut Butter Bacon Shake are available for four weeks only, running through Feb. 4.
The burger is a contrast in textures and flavors, layering two beef patties with creamy peanut butter, crisp bacon, grilled onions and melted cheese on a toasted bakery bun. It sells for $6.39. The shake is a sweet-savory blend of peanut butter and bacon with vanilla soft serve garnished with whipped topping and a cherry; it’s priced at $3.99 for a medium size.
The mashups are a first for Oklahoma City-based Sonic, but peanut butter and bacon are an iconic flavor duo. No other than Elvis Presley popularized the pairing in “The Elvis,” a grilled peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwich that’s earned a spot in America’s culinary legacy.
Although Sonic is a leading innovator in the milkshakes category, in a featured MenuFeed podcast, VP of culinary Mackenzie Gibson said that the chain wants to “grow up to become a burger QSR.” R&D seems to be pointing in that direction with recent introductions including the Hickory BBQ Cheeseburger, Garlic Butter Bacon Cheeseburger and now the Peanut Butter Bacon SuperSonic Double Cheeseburger.
